One day I happened onto a YouTube video on candle magick. I'm not comfortable with "magick" but this kept calling me like a chocolate bar sitting in front of me that was begging to be eaten. It could not be ignored. So when I am drawn to something with this much magnitude, I know spirit is at work and I need to explore the information put in front of me.
So I began learning about candle magick. I found that it resonated very deep withing but I was not comfortable with the magick rituals involved. I did not want to hunt down the perfect candle color while waiting two weeks for a waning moon on a Tuesday evening. Frankly it was more complicated than Colonel Mustard in the dining room with a candlestick (pun intended). I understand the reasons behind the "rules" but that does not resonate with me. However, I do like the concept of the power of focused thought along with an action that can assists me in creating what I want to achieve.
It was a common practice in my former church that if you had a special prayer for someone or something, you could go to church, put some money in a little box, light a candle, and then say a prayer for your cause. That was not magick, it was simply communing with the Highest Being and asking for help. I have Christian roots and for whatever reason, I do not deviate too far from them. I was not a super religious person by any means prior to my spiritual awakening, but I find great comfort in praying to God, Jesus, Mary and the Saints. So for my comfort zone, I decided to call it "Candle Prayers"
Funny how one word can make all the difference? I have worked with several different candle prayers in the past couple of months and I am very pleased with the results. It works for me and I enjoy the time I spend in meditation and communication with my "helpers". It's very peaceful, uplifting and empowering.
I want to talk about magick and how I fell about it. I have to tell you that when I started on my spiritual journey, I was very defensive if someone would put me in the realm as a person who was a Pagan, Witch, or someone who dabbled with magick. To be honest, "witch stuff" scares the pants off of me. In my present life, I have no known reasons for this fear (I guess I could consider what I was taught as a child growing up in church), but I do know that I have many reasons to fear being called a witch from my past life times. I have been persecuted more than once for practicing the magical arts.
It may be easier for most people (myself included) to work with the idea of "the power of positive thinking" than it is to consider "doing a spell". I want to add that I am not talking about witchcraft or the practice of magick as a whole; I'm just looking at this one aspect, candle magick and my feelings and experiences with it.
"Intentions are a simple matter of focusing and directing your thoughts on something that you would like to make happen in your life. It's an excellent way to direct thoughts toward a constructive goal." I agree with this definition of an intention. That statement came from a book written by Christopher Penczak called "Instant Magick". I changed a word, It originally stated, "Spells are a simple matter of focusing and directing your thoughts on something that you would like to make happen in your life. It's an excellent way to direct thoughts toward a constructive goal." Hmmm... once again, funny how one word can make such a difference?
Modern mystics define magick as creating change in your reality with the power of your will. You intend something to happen, and it occurs.
To me, a modern day mystic is a person who utilizes energy for the betterment of their surroundings without interfering in the free will of others through prayer, positive intentions and affirmations, natural healing practices, meditation and accepting the presence of the Divine.
The intentions/magick spells that I am working with are about change. The greatest change is the change that occurs in the inner self; my true self, not the outer self. The types of intentions/spells that I am drawn to are those that involve will, prayer, intent, natural healing practices, assistance from the Divine, my angles, teachers and guides, meditation and visualization. If I am from the light, it will be of the light.
I'm gathering an understanding of how close the old religions and traditions of Spiritual Alchemy, Gnosticism, Paganism and Druidic teachings are intertwined with Christianity. Christianity was developed centuries ago, but its roots sprang from the older traditions.
I can only speak for myself, in the end it does not matter what it is called. I'm coming to terms with my fears and putting them in their proper place. It's the results that count. Use what resonates within and follow where you are led. You were guided there for a reason...
Love and Light,
